The specific gravity chart is used to aid in the creation of layered shots which are basically made by floating liquors (usually liqueurs), syrups or creams on top of one another. These ingredients have different densities or weight per volume, so you start with the heaviest and finish with the lightest. It works better or is easier to layer, if you choose liqueurs with more than 0.05 to 0. 10 value difference from each other.
