How To Make Simple Syrup
How To Make Simple Syrup
Simple syrup is simply a mixture of granulated sugar and water. It is a must in any well-stocked bar. Granulated sugar will not dissolve easily in alcohol but simple syrup will. It is used for drinks that require a sweetener ingredient, such as a Daiquiri. You use simple syrup so that you don’t end up with undissolved sugar crystals in the drink. The common ratio is 2:1 (water-sugar).
SIMPLE SYRUP MADE EASY
- You need 1 cup of granulated sugar (1) and 2 cups of cold water (2).
- Place sugar and water in a saucepan (3).
- Bring to a gentle boil stirring constantly (4).
- Reduce to medium heat stirring constantly (5).
- Stir until sugar has completely dissolved (6).
- You shouldn’t see any sugar crystals (7).
- Allow to cool to room temperature.
- Transfer to a glass container (8).
- Store in the refrigerator. Will keep for up to 3-4 months.
For a thick simple syrup use 1:1 ratio or adjust to your needs.
The process takes about 10 – 15 minutes. Making simple syrup on the stove assures that you won’t get sugar crystals after a few weeks in the fridge. Need simple syrup on the fly? Use boiling water from a kettle.
BROWN SIMPLE SYRUP
Brown syrup is made the same way as simple syrup and use the same ratio of sugar/water. Brown syrup has a rich flavour that blends well with dark rum and hot toddy drinks. Use judiciously, it can overpower other ingredients and change the colour of a cocktail.
Cheers!

Hello,
Simmer it on a top stove element, and I think, it should be fine.
What are your thoughts/experiences on Monk Fruit/Stevia in Simple Syrup? I’m considering using it, as I’m looking to stay Keto/Low Carb. Will alcohol (grain alcohol in my case) keep it from crystallization? I’m considering this for my next batch of Limoncello, which i store in the freezer. Thanks!
