Morning Glory – Boozy & Strong

The Morning Glory is a powerful spirit-based drink. Admittedly, it may put you back into a haze if you have more than one, so be careful. The early recipe, from the 1880s, used gum syrup and Absinthe for medicinal purpose. The cocktail was in the Jerry Thomas’s Bartender Guide. Gum syrup is a thick liquid consisting of gum Arabic ( resin from the Acacia tree ) in water.  It was commonly used to sweeten cocktails. Gum syrup fell out of favor for bartenders because it is challenging to make, and nowadays difficult to buy.  The name Morning Glory also applies to a Champagne cocktail recipe. Here’s a list of Absinthe substitutes.
