The Soda Fountain Drink Family Tree

Smoothies, milkshakes, floats,  slushies, and frozen drinks are all delicious summer drinks. Quick, easy to make, and bursting with flavours, it is no surprise that these concoctions are back in popularity in bars and at home. When temperature starts rising leave it to these modern refreshing drinks to cool things down. This family of drinks has something for everyone. In the heyday of the soda fountain era during the 1940’s and 1950’s these were mostly non-alcoholic beverages. They are deliciously smooth and thirst quenching with or without alcohol. Here’s a list of the soda fountain drink family:

FLOAT – Essentially made with a scoop of ice cream and a flavoured soft drink such as root beer, orange soda as opposed to carbonated water flavoured  with syrup.

FRAPPÉ – A mixture of ice cream, milk, or cream and flavourings. Better known as a milkshake in North America.

FREEZE – A mixture of water, juice or syrup, and crush ice blended to a granulated texture, with the addition of a dairy ingredient such as milk, frozen yogurt, or others.

ICE CREAM SODA – A drink mixture of carbonated water, syrup, and ice cream. The ice cream interacts with the carbonation to create a frothy head.

MILKSHAKE – A beverage made of milk or cream flavoured syrup shaken to a thick smooth texture.

SLUSH – A mixture of water, juice or syrup, and crush ice blended to a granulated texture.

SMOOTHIE – A beverage made by puréeing fruits or vegetables with juice, yogurt, milk, or ice cream, to a thick and smooth consistency.
