Caipirinha – Lowball

Ingredients

Half Lime
Brown sugar
1/2 oz Simple syrup
2 oz Cachaça 51
A scoop of ice

Muddle and Build

1. Cut half a lime in quarters and put them in an Old Fashioned style glass.

2. Add 1 tsp of brown sugar and 1/2 oz of sugar syrup.

3. Muddle.

4. Pour in Cachaça.

5. Add ice.

6. Stir well.

7. Garnish with a lime wedge.

NOTE

When muddling be careful not to press so hard that you break the glass.

Variation

Substitute white for the brown sugar.

Caipirinha translates to ‘peasant’s drink’. Cachaça is the main ingredient which is a dry style of rum made in Brazil. In the Caipirinha, the sugar cuts through the sharpness of the lime and the Cachaça adds a little sweetness and gives a decent kick. This drink is consumed all over the country, and is considered by many the national drink of Brazil. We use brown sugar instead of white to give it a hint of molasses flavour in the finish.
